Novel about the Rat Pack « Thread Started on Dec 13, 2006, 7:53am »
I came across a book review this morning about the Rat Pack. It's a novel called "Everybody Kills Somebody Sometime". The cover shows Dean, Frank, Sammy, Peter (no Joey). It's about someone sending Dino death threats while performing in Vegas and how worried Frank is about it. The author uses their real names (Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, etc.). It sounds like a hoot. It even has Sam Giancana, Judith Campbell and Wayne Newton. Here's the link
Dean Martin: "The best thing I ever did was meet Jerry Lewis. The best thing I ever did was leave Jerry Lewis" Dean to Jerry on CCH: "Are you sure you got the right head back from the cleaners?" Jerry to Dean on CCH: "Sing regular. Sing regular"
"I am very proud of my Italian heritage. It's who I am. The only one who can call me dago is Frank Sinatra. I call him dago too. With anybody else, there's a fight."- Dean
DEAN: "Eeny Meeny Miny...I'm the leader!" JER: "What happened to Mo?" DEAN: "Ain't no Mo!" JER: "Well dawggone!"

It's fiction but with the real Rat Pack guys as the characters. I already ordered mine from Overstock. This book is the first in a series this guy is writing but I don't know if the other books will be about the RP or not.

It does sound like fun, doesn't it. It came out in October...but I just heard about it today. I went to Borders and Barnes and Nobel today but they both would have had to order it so I went home and ordered it from Overstock. Even with the shipping, it turned out to be a few dollars cheaper than those big book stores. Can't wait.

All right, so I just picked this sucker up and read it all in one sitting, I just finished. I have to say, I really liked it overall. If you expect it to have the Rat Pack in it constantly, you'll be disappointed. It's mostly all about Eddie G. . At first I thought, "Wow, he's making Dean sound like a sissy, worrying about stupid notes" and at one point having a least one person believe a cover-up story that Dean and Jeanne are fighting and he's being guarded to prevent suicide (please...seriously)--and I held that opinoin throught the book until the very end when the author redeems that ideal (great scene for Dean at the end ). Dean's always running off to watch John Wayne or Roy Rodgers LOL (although, the author made a factual error--he has Dean state that since Rio Bravo, he now tries to watch all of John Wayne's old movies, and we know that isn't true at all, Dean watched John Wayne since Duke started to act), but I loved that trait was included, as well as comics books, not partying, his nochalant political attitude towards then-Senator Kennedy, his independence from Frank, etc.. He really, other than Dean showing worry over notes lol, captured him well. He nails them all pretty well, I thought, even the Mafia stuff. He is not kind for the most part to Peter Lawford lol. My favorite part was probably the part with JFK, and Dean and Eddie G. discussing him and Frank and all of that, Dean making predictions. The author asks a question to the reader there about Dean and Frank that we know the answer to now, and personally I love that sort of thing . It was pretty predictable if you thought about it as far as the who-done-it goes. The stories and the sheer fact it's the Rat Pack in Vegas shooting Ocean's 11, however, make up for that. I think the somewhat preditability of the villian/s is just fine though, because anything more dramatic would have been too far-fetched and silly, imho.
My only complaint about the book: it would be about a hundred pages shorter if the author had taken the nasty, explicit sex and the f-word out. Every girl is a dirty tramp with an equally dirty mouth. I've talked to girls, (now old ladies ), that were around then, around that sort of thing. I have to say the author did NOT capture the girls well, even the tramps. Even bad girlies didn't say some of the things he had them say (it'd be pefect for a new-release rated R movie, if that helps you visualize lol). And some of the, uh, situations he *descibes*...I actually said "ew..." aloud a few times lol. Personally, I don't care to hear/read the word t**s 500 times. The fellas cursing at each other and so on, I don't mind, that's what they do, but to hear some of the things he had the women say...*shudder*, not true-to-life as of then. I just thought he put in too much smut (and mind you, it was all smut involving 'Eddie G.', never the Rat Pack, which made me think the writer vulgar and seeming just a weeeeee-bit too eagar to fantasize and share it with the world lol--not cool) and had the ladies 'talk dirty' to the author's original character (which, judging from the author's picture, he's pulling a fedora over his eyes, so I'm positive he probably fancied himself the lead in the book). I don't mind reading about Eddie G., saying he was, uh, watching a girl walk away, but he carried it WAY too far to just make it plain nasty to read, and it was pretty much constant. Honestly, there was more of that than The Rat Pack, which easily bordered on ruining the novel. Had he not captured them well and had the Rat Pack in it any less, it probably would have. I'm no prude--of course you have to have broads and all of that when you write about these guys, that's part of their appeal (to me, anyway), but the Rat Pack managed to include dames and simply be cool enough to ALLUDE to other things and make witty 'dirty' jokes with out having to give all the details all the time. I say this mostly applies to their entertainment, and the author, now providing entertainment based on them, did not follow their fine examples. He actually kinda made me feel like I was reading novel porn written by a dirty old man (juding from the authur's picture lol). I guess that's why they're the, as he put it, "The Kings of Cool" and he was simply writing about them.
I still say I liked it because 1) it was well written. No frills, no flowers, just a story, and I liked that because it suited the boys. That was was a big points earner for me. Very good on that one, 2) he did a pretty good job of getting a grip on the fellas (aside from the aboved mentioned worried Dean lol), 3)...it had the Rat Pack in it lol .
Hope that helps everyone! I thought I should warn about it having more dirty stuff than Dino because I had no idea lol (yet another testament that you can't get anything close to perfect these days, even when it's set in 1960 with the Rat Pack lol).
Basically, if you have to have every Dino/Frank/Rat Pack book or if you just like to have something to read, pick it up for around $25 at BooksaMillion like me (I don't ever buy bios or anything because they're usually wrong and try to be too 'scandolous' and mellodramatic, but I took the plunge on this one for some reason--it's not scandolous or mellodramatic, just smutted up all over the place lol). It's nice to have a little something new with the Rat Pack, anyway you can get it, right?

I'm glad I could offer anything . It's mostly dirty stuff, actually lol (stip joints, cheap hotels, etc.), in my opinion with a few odd little ends (having Dean have told someone he reads comics to "escape reality", which didn't seem 'Dean' to me, and him saying how hard he had to work to get 'the Ohio' out of his voice instead of the Italian...and a few typos on quotation marks LOL), but at least it's a little something to read that has to do with the Rat Pack if you're just looking for a book .

very very quick read, i read it in 4 hours lol but it was a lot of fun, i was a little surprised by the content a little bit, but i was a great just for fun read. i don't hold much in the facts and stuff but it was good. especially the end, i think that part was worth it all.
Please remember the moral of tonight's show: Put your troubles away till tomorrow. If you're lucky someone'll break into you house tonight and steal them. -Dean Martin
